Interaction and Intersection in Research and Development of Cooling Towers and Concrete Chimneys

In this project, the different aspects of national and international codes and guidelines for concrete chimneys and natural draught cooling towers have been compared and presented. Simultaneous developments and intersections with respect to the design philosophy of both industrial concrete chimneys and cooling towers are investigated. The results shall help the experts in this area to identify the interactions in research, development and standardization of both structures for future joint activities and research projects. One of the main scientific results of the present research project is indicative that for cylindrical chimneys the results according to the beam theory are not on the safe side in comparison to the results due to shell theory. This depends on the ratios of height to diameter h/d and thickness to height t/h. The limits for h/d and t/h ratios were evaluated and proposed. The results show for the h/d and t/h ratios lower than the specified limits, the beam theory is not accurate and shell theory should be used to analyze the free-standing concrete chimneys.
